Advertise On PhilosophyOnline

Firstly, I only accept ads which have something to do with philosophy. So, if you make shoes, bake cakes, or sell insurance – unless they are replica shoes of the ones Plato wore, or cakes baked to the same recipe that Kant’s mother used to use, or the sort of insurance that pays out in cases of existential crisis – then you should try somewhere else. If you are a publisher, an author, a magazine, a website, or an educational institution, then your ad should primarily concern philosophy, and not any other wonderful enterprise that you wish to draw attention to. So, in short, I’m not against fun or novelty philosophical merchandise, I just want to safeguard my visitors from over exposure to pointless non-philosophical advertising. If you are in doubt as to whether your ad would qualify, just drop me a line.

If you wish to advertise on the site, please contact me using the form, and choose “About Advertising on your Website” from the subject menu, stating how long you would like the ad to run for, how many slots you want, and where you want the ad to link to.

As you may or may not have noticed, there is one ad space on each page of the site (between links to “Buy my Books” and “Reviews”), which is quite large and prominent. So, in purchasing advertising, you only really need to decide (a) how often you want the ad to appear, and (b) how long you want it to run for. All ads on PhilosophyOnline appear on a rotating basis, with a maximum of 24 ad slots available at any one time. However, you may purchase as many ad slots as you want, and for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months at a time.

For example, if you buy 1 ad, it will appear once in every 24 pageviews; if you buy 2 ads, once in every 12 pageviews; 3 ads, once in every 8 pageviews – and so on. So, the more ad slots you buy, the more often your ad will appear, and the cheaper it gets.

The minimum period for advertising is 1 month, and the maximum period 12 months (renewable, obviously), and the longer the period of advertising, the cheaper the rates.

Number of ad slots Cost per ad slot for…
1 month 3 months 6 months 12 months
1-2 £ 12 £ 12 £ 11 £ 11
3-5 £ 12 £ 11 £ 11 £ 10
6-11 £ 11 £ 11 £ 10 £ 10
12 or more £ 11 £ 10 £ 10 £ 9

So, to calculate total cost, simply multiply the number of ads you want by the length of time you want to rent ad space for, then multiply the result by the rate for that period. So, 3 ads for 6 months would cost you: 3 ads x 6 months x £11 = £198.

Payment can be by cheque (for those living in the UK), or, for those in the rest of the world, PayPal (for a small extra cost to cover fees) or direct bank transfer.

Text ads and graphic ads are the same price.

Text ads must be made up of 12 lines of no more than 29 characters each (including spaces and punctuation); ads which do not fit the space will need to be trimmed. Remember: any web links do not have to actually appear in the ad, but can be links from key words (e.g. “Buy THIS”). Other than that, your ad can contain more or less what you want it to (within reason). So, if you wanted to put a number of links in that space, then that’s fine. However, your ad can’t just be a collection of links – it should make sense. PhilosophyOnline reserves final editorial decision!

Graphic ads must be no higher than 268 px, and no wider than 178 px, though they can of course be smaller. Images should have a file size of no greater than 80 kb, and be in .png, .gif, or .jpg format (so, no animated gifs, Flash movies (.swf), pop-ups, or ads that expand to fill your screen and then make their way to your brain).
