Introduction

For those of you who don't know, Twitter is the social networking site that lets you tell all who are interested precisely what you are up to at any point of your day in little 140 character chunks. This may sound completely pointless, but when has that ever stopped technological progress?! However, gradually, the site has evolved certain genuine uses, such as sharing a favourite book, a funny link, a piece of news, or a useful link.

So, racking my brains for some philosophical use to put it to, I decided it would be "fun" to "tweet" the complete history of Western philosophy. Obviously, in 140 characters, you are not going to witness any great insights here, and it is not always serious, but when your boss/teacher/spouse catches you, you can at least point to ATHoP as evidence that you are improving your mind, and familiarising yourself with your intellectual heritage (I'm sorry, but you'll have to think up your own excuses for that other stuff that you look at...).

By the way, this is not meant to be a history of the whole of philosophy, but merely the Western strand (and only a selected survey of that). I am fully aware that there are other philosophical traditions (Indian, African, Islamic, Buddhist, etc.), but, whilst I may occasionally draw links with other traditions, I will not focus on them. Another time, perhaps.

Contributions will be numbered, and when things get too unwieldy, I may start to filter them in some way. However, for now, I will list them all on one page, with a block update of seven tweets at the end of each week (roughly). You can follow the latest tweets on the frontpage, or else on Twitter itself (www.twitter.com/#search?q=%23ATHoP).

So, beginning with the ancient Greeks, some two and a half millennia ago...
