Descartes's Meditations - Study

The following sections are intended to provide you with self-test questions for the main arguments and ideas in the Meditations. There is one section for each Meditation, and most questions follow the list of arguments as identified in the Summary sections.

I have provided answers to each question (which you can access simply by holding your mouse over the Answer link). However, in each subsection the questions get gradually more difficult, starting with general comprehension questions and progressing to questions concerning broader issues and critical analysis. Therefore, as regards the harder questions, I do not give full answers, but simply indicate different general directions in which you could take your answer.

Finally, I have also given each question possible marks. This is not meant as a real indication of how you might score in an exam, but is just meant to give you a general idea of how well you know your stuff. It is also meant as a bit of fun, so don’t take it too seriously, though if you do cheat then I will know – I can’t do anything about it, but you should just be aware of my omniscience in that respect.
