  Summary

Identity theory originated as a means of solving the mind-body problem in the simplest way – by making physical brain states identical with mental states. As such, it is a monist view (there being one substance) and a materialist one (that substance being matter). However, there are various problems associated with the view and it has now decreased in popularity by a view called Functionalism, which we shall look at next.
