• Theories of mind tend to fall into one of two main categories: monist and dualist.
• Monism can be further subdivided into materialism and idealism.

There are other theories that add subtle variations to these main divisions, and some that attempt to sit midway in between. We will look at these later on, but first we are going to look in more depth at the dualist viewpoint.
